Li Yanwen's Ginseng Doctrine

When Li Yanwen set out to write exclusively on this herb,
he pioneered an unprecedented path for Chinese ginseng culture:
shifting ginseng from legend to science, experience to knowledge, medicinal herb to life philosophy.

The Question of Ginseng

Abandoned Official Fame; Held Fast to Healing Faith.

In 1520, 23‑year‑old Li Yanwen failed the imperial exam. Severe drought and plague struck his hometown; his young son Li Shizhen was frail. Witnessing people’s suffering, he gave up official pursuits to practice medicine.

He roamed mountains for herbs, studied ancient medical texts and learned widely, becoming a respected physician. His choice to heal rather than seek fame was recorded in local chronicles.

“What is the way of the king of herbs?” Li Yanwen wrote this account of ginseng, showing later generations how to understand and use it properly. This marks the start of Li Yanwen’s Ginseng Way.

The Outline of Ginseng

Pioneering Monograph for One Herb; One Treatise Opens the Ginseng Way.

Before Treatise on Ginseng, ancient texts such as Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica mentioned ginseng mixed with other herbs. No book focused solely on one medicinal herb.

Li Yanwen’s Treatise on Ginseng established the Ginseng Way. It pioneered monographs for single herbs in Chinese medicine, highlighting ginseng’s vital role as the root of life.

The Method of Ginseng

Categorized Herbs for Study; Refined Herbs for Remedy.

Li Yanwen broke past fragmented records of ginseng. He created the first systematic classification framework, establishing a standard academic model for materia medica.

Inspired by his father, Li Shizhen further developed this method. He built the “categories follow main outlines” structure and wrote the masterpiece Compendium of Materia Medica.

This classification system predated Linnaeus’ Systema Naturae by more than a century. A treasure of traditional Chinese medicine, it is known as the great oriental medical encyclopedia and shines in world science history.
